The mysterious Russian medieval mummies

In July 2015, a mummy literally involved in strange circumstances and materials was found in Siberia. It is also part of a story that began in 2002 and is still far from being a mystery clarified by archeology.

The mysterious Russian medieval mummies

Arctic Circle

Let's talk about this mummy.of a body of 1.30 m covered with copper sheets and wrapped in birch barks, like a “chrysalis”, discovered in Salekhard, very close to the Arctic circle, which also forms part of a group of corpses with Persian features found in this area, 6,000 kilometers from present-day Iran.

Mummy by accident

The body, found in a pit, could have mummified by "accident" eight hundred years ago, between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries .The child, it is speculated that it is because of its size, may have been mummified thanks to the properties of the permafrost (the frozen soil of the Arctic Circle) and the copper sheets with which it was covered.Until now the body has been studied without opening the “chrysalis”, but it is believed that it must be very well preserved.

This story began in 2002, at an old crossing of trade routes, in Zeleny Yar, less than 30km from the Arctic Circle, where a group of archaeologists discovered in eleven shallow graves about eleven mummified bodies with shattered skulls wrapped in sheets of copper.

Archaeologists believe that the skulls were shattered after death, as a kind of funeral ritual still unknown .

There was only one woman and several children with faces covered with copper masks; also a red-haired adult (as can be seen in the cover photo). All with Persian features and surrounded with objects of this culture possibly of the eleventh century, although the burial was dated around 1282.

The spirits versus history

Accompanying the mummies were achieved Copper bowls, axes and iron swords and a silver medallion of the ninth century and, perhaps, after thirteen years there should be more information. However, the excavations had to be interrupted due to pressures of the inhabitants of this region, known like the “End of the Earth”, who considered that they were bothering ancestral spirits of their culture.

The mysterious Russian medieval mummies

The excavation work was recently restarted, under the direction of Alexander Pilipenko , of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian area of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and through new studies expect to unveil the mister io of these Persian mummies in Siberia in a short time.

What do you think these mummies could be? Comment on it!
