Lakes and rivers have traditionally been magical, unique places where primitive cultures believed they lived mythological beings, aquatic deities whose protection or clemency was necessary to procure through sacrifices and prayers.Over time there have been legends and traditions, but in some specific places on the planet these strange and mythical creatures are still really alive. The most famous is undoubtedly Nessie, the famous Loch Ness monster , but there are other legendary creatures of which data are barely known One of them is the mysterious Ogopogo, the Okanagan lake monster , in Canada.
A bloody legend
Okanagan Lake is located in British Columbia, about 400km east of Vancouver. The legend of this monster has no comparison with Nessie and its story was released about 7 years before news about it was published sightings of the Scottish monster. The legend of Ogopogo is much better documented and there are numerous studies about it.
Its origin dates back to the time of the American Indians who reported how Ogopogo was the reincarnation of a native whose soul had been punished to be reincarnated as a monster by having slaughtered a venerable old man of the tribe. The native Indians called him Naitaka and every time they crossed the lake they made sacrifices the monster throwing small animals into the water. But this legend seems to be more related to a spirit of water, than to the real animal that some witnesses say they have seen crossing its waters.
The sightings of Ogopogo
Certainly, Ogopogo is a very popular monster in Canada, and its first appearance dates back to 1872 , during the European colonization of the area.A legend gained more strength from the end of the 20s of the 20th century, specifically since 1926.Since that year numerous sightings of Ogopogo have been reported.According to the witnesses, the monster is dark, with several humps, skin of green or gray tone and with the head of a horse or sheep.Others detail that it has ears or horns and some simply describe something moving and creating waves in the water with its movement.Starting from these descriptions and the videos and photos that have been taken, the cryptozoologists have concluded that Ogopogo could be a primitive animal descended from the Cetoides Basilosaurus , a species of whale, while Nessie could be a similar animal or descendant of the plesiosaurs .
The latest research
Arlene Gall , author of 3 books on the legend of Ogopogo, It has documented all the sightings during three decades, these being very numerous. However, scientific research has not achieved conclusive results. In 1991 a search was carried out with high-tech devices in order to locate more conclusive remains and evidence about the lake monster. The remote control vehicle enabled for the search plunged about 840 meters along the bottom of the lake without anything being detected, sightings or bones of any creature.
Be that as it may, the phenomenon persists and monster sightings continue to be habitual today. For some it remains a creature of an unknown and primitive species , while for others they are beavers, sturgeons or other animals that live in the lake and have been seen under the influence of some optical illusion caused by water and light or simply drifting logs in the water.
