What were wandering souls according to tradition
Wandering souls are the equivalent to a ghost that meets conditions .They were called wandering souls for being the ghosts of men or women who, voluntarily, at death have not made the move to a higher plane .They have remained on earth turned into a shadow, into a ghost.

According to most traditions the reasons why they have not transcended are varied: in some cases it is because there is something special that has decided to stay, in others it is because due to their bad actions they prefer to remain on earth as wandering souls rather than going to hell or purgatory , others may feel ashamed of something and because of this shame they don't want to go over and the last case includes those who have not been buried or have not received the funeral honors that their religion demands. In this last group we find especially the drowned who have died in the sea and whose bodies have never been found.Go desperate to receive the tribute and in some cultures the offerings and sacrifices of their descendants .
There are traditions in which wandering souls take the fo Rma of an animal, mainly of horse, dog, crow, pig or goat and these beings will always present a mutilation: they usually lack a member or head.In other cultures they take igneous forms like an incandescent orb or a flame.

In Japan the belief in the wandering souls is deeply rooted.By their Buddhist religion they believe that, as we have explained before, the souls will not go beyond if their descendants do not offer them a funeral according to its traditions .After the catastrophe of Fukushima , there are many stories that explain about encounters with wandering souls in the wrecked area.

What s students of tradition and folklore indicate that we must differentiate between wandering souls and "souls in pain" .The souls of this last group do not remain voluntarily on earth, but they are doomed to it.They correspond in many cases to suicides. They go tirelessly trying to find the way to the Hereafter and in many cases they do not know that they have died .
