Throughout history there are many books that have dealt with the theme of witchcraft .In Mysterious we have talked about the "Malleus Maleficarum" or "Hammer of the witches », a manual for inquisitors, written in the 15th century, to help with their identification and condemnation. There are old books on witchcraft before and after this one and among them they highlight the Formicarius , which was later included in the Malleus, and the Saducismus triumphatus .
Formicarius and Saducismus triumphatus two old books on witchcraft
Between one and another book mediates more than two centuries and the approaches of both adapt to the philosophy of the time in which they were written .If they are remarkable it is because each one of them contributes something new to the way it looked and believed in witchcraft in past centuries.

Formicarius
The Formicarius en the second book about witchcraft that was published in the world. It was written by Johannes Nider between 1436 and 1438 .Witchcraft is especially dealt with in the fifth section of the The novelty is that it brings us closer to the way in which the witchcraft and the witches were seen from then on.Until that moment it was considered that the sorcery was something masculine and that it required complex magic formulas to obtain results. The Formicarius changes that vision completely, from then on it is considered that witches are generally women and have no culture .Anyone can simply be a witch surrendering to the devil . Misogino to the core, considered that the witches were mostly women since they were mental, moral and physically inferior and therefore could be more easily attracted to the evil one.

The book explains many stories of witchcraft collected mostly in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. These, exposed in a teacher-student dialogue , are designed to serve as an example of what clergy should look for and how to explain and answer the questions of their parishioners on the subject. The Formicarius was later part of the Malleus Maleficarum.
Saducismus triumphatus
The Saducismus triumphatus was published in 1681 in England when its author, Joseph Glanvill, had already passed away. His novelty is that, although he is a firm believer in the existence of malefic powers and witchcraft, tries to impose an empirical method -very consistent with the ideas of the time-, to supernatural issues.Glanvill advocated for religious tolerance and freedom of thought, but also believed that the existence of spirits It was endorsed by the Bible and that not believing in them could only lead society towards chaos. The book explains several stories of witchcraft and gives one of the first descriptions of the "witch bottles".

The Saducismus triumphatus was used as the basis for another book, that of Cotton Mather " Wonders of the invisible world" that was written to justify the terrible case of Salem's witches.
If you liked to know these old books about witchcraft, maybe you want to know that 13,000 books of witchcraft and occultism have been found in a Nazi library.
