Legend has it that Judge John Mompesson judged an old soldier named William Drury, who had been a drummer in the Cromwell Regiment , for having falsified the identification papers he was carrying and raising money under false pretenses. Before the defendant's complaints, the magistrate agreed to release him, but while the veracity of the papers was resolved, retained the ex-soldier's musical instrument in his house. From that moment, every night and for 2 years, when the family lay down, the drum roll could be heard all over the house , especially in the children's room.Only for two weeks, after the birth of the new son of Mr.Mompesson, the poltergeist sounds ceased.
