The mysterious disappearance of Mary Celeste, a cursed ship?
The Mary Celeste was launched in Nova Scotia in 1861 .a 31-meter-long brig that first received the name of "Amazon" .Stories about the curse of the ship began from its launch since what was to be its first captain was drowned before taking possession, and the second died on the maiden voyage .In 1869, its owners sold it and the new l or renamed the name by which it has been known since then: «Mary Celeste» .
On November 5, 1872 embarked on a journey from New York to Gibraltar, with Genova final destination, transporting in its wineries 1,701 barrels of industrial alcohol .In addition to the 7 crew members, they traveled alongside the captain Benjamin Spooner Briggs, his wife and two-year-old daughter.
One month after he left New York, on December 5, 1872 , he was spotted near the Azores by another ship, the Dei Gratia .This one covered the route between New York and Gibraltar. Its captain, David Reed Morehouse, who knew Briggs, was I approached the Mary Celeste and I soon find out that there was nothing ie on deck .A group of men were sent to inspect and they came back explaining that, indeed, no one was on board . The lifeboat was missing and because of the way the ties were cut it seemed that someone had fled in it in a hasty way. The table was set and there were leftover food there. The clothes and money , so a pirate attack was ruled out. Things were still in place , only damaged by the passing of days with open hatches.the inclemency of a hurricane or other atmospheric phenomenon. It was only on deck, out of place , the wand to measure the water that accumulated in the bilge .At that time , was measured and did not reach a meter, normal thing in that type of ship.Only some navigation instruments and documents were missing cion of the ship .What had happened? Why was nothing more known about navigators?
The hypotheses were and are still very varied today .From a plot to collect the ship's insurance, even an explosion on the part of the load of alcohol.Although the most feasible is that, for some reason-as an erroneous measurement-it would be thought that the ship was sinking by a accumulation of water in the bilge .I would have left the ship quickly but neatly.
The mystery is still present and a Spanish journalist , Francisco Garcia Novell, thinks he has found the answer to the enigma in Asturias .In May 1873 some Candas fishermen , Asturias, drifted on the high seas, two rafts with corpses .In one of them there was a man dead tied to the mast in which honed the American flag and in the other 5 more corpses in decomposition.Possibly due to an error of transcription of the name of the place in the news that came out in the press, the two facts were never related .The journalist tries to prove that those bodies were those of the crew of Mary Celeste.get, at least part of the mystery will have been solved.
