Superstition and fear of the unknown have given completely natural objects and beings a patina of mystery.In past centuries the fear of witches and beings that lived in the forests turned some plants into products resulting from spells and evil creatures .This is the case of the nostoc, witch butter and trolling jelly. Nostoc
Nostoc is really a kind of cyanobacteria They develop in the form of colonies.Paracelso was the one who gave them the name and can be found both on the ground and at the bottom of lakes, springs or wet rocks.Normally it is difficult to see nostoc, but when it rains, the cyanobacteria inflate resulting in a kind of gelatinous mass and strange.In some places in Asia and in areas of the Andes is consumed by the population.
Popular legends said that the nostoc was coming down from the sky along with the rain to feed the fantastic beings living in the woods .It is also called "star gelatin" along with other gelatinous substances of various origins that can be found in forests and trees.
Witch butter
Witch butter is actually a fungus of the Auriculariaceae family .It is common throughout northern Europe and grows normally on dead branches and wood in a state of rot.the first half of the 18th century is known as the «exidia nigricans» as witch butter .
Popular legend explained that the witches went out at night to order other people's cows and steal their milk.they had ordered the milk became bad and the splashes became the "witch butter".
Troll jelly
The Troll jelly or troll butter is a kind of mucilaginous mold called «Septic whip» of yellowish color that grows on the wood and on the trees after the rains.
Scandinavian folklore believed it was that the trolls left in the woods .In other parts of Europe it is this species called butter of a witch for its yellow color and it was believed that the witches sent the t rols to steal the milk of their neighbors and when they did and spilled in the forest it gave rise to trolley butter.In some Nordic regions it is the nostoc which is called «trolley jelly» .
